Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and
Oriental Medicine (ACAOM)
American Academy of Medical Acupuncture
The purpose of the American Academy of Medical
Acupuncture is to promote the integration of
concepts from traditional and modern forms of
acupuncture with Western medical training and
thereby synthesize a more comprehensive approach to
health care.
American Association of Oriental Medicine
The American
Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AAAOM),
was formed in 1981 to be the unifying force for
American acupuncturists who are committed to high
ethical and educational standards, and a well
regulated profession to ensure the safety of the
public. As the umbrella organization representing
the acupuncture profession in the United States,
the AAAOM assisted in the formation of both the
National Commission for the Certification of
Acupuncturists (NCCA, now NCCAOM) and the National
Council of Acupuncture Schools and Colleges (NCASC,
now CCAOM) in 1982.
American Oriental Bodywork Therapy Association
The AOBTA was formed in
1989 with the coming together of a number of
associations, which represented individual
disciplines of Asian Bodywork Therapy. AOBTA
currently has 1,400 active members in the U.S. and
abroad. Member benefits include optional,
low-cost professional liability insurance,
disability insurance, a national membership
newsletter, national and regional workshops and a
practitioner referral service through National
Headquarters and the Web.
British Medical Acupuncture Society
The BMAS is a
registered charity established to encourage the use
and scientific understanding of acupuncture within
medicine for the public benefit. It seeks to
enhance the education and training of suitably
qualified practitioners, and to promote high
standards of working practices in acupuncture among
such practitioners, by means of tests,
examinations, and accreditation procedures.
Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental
Medicine
The mission of the
CCAOM is to advance acupuncture and Oriental
medicine by promoting educational excellence within
the field. The philosophy of the Council is based
on respect for the broad range of traditions of
acupuncture and Oriental medicine and a commitment
to academic freedom.
International Council of Medical Acupuncture and
Related Techniques
ICMART is a non-profit
making international organization comprising more
than 50 medical acupuncture societies worldwide. It
includes over 25,000 doctors practicing acupuncture
and related techniques.
Medical Acupuncture Research Foundation
MARF was founded in 1988 as a charitable, nonprofit
organization which serves as the research arm of
the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture. The
AAMA is the national professional society of
physicians in North America who have incorporated
the use of acupuncture into their medical practice.
MARF is committed to all aspects of encouraging
acupuncture research. This includes supporting both
clinicians and researchers involved in acupuncture
research, supporting the structure and
organizations needed to foster the research, and
directly promoting the research.
National Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine Alliance
The Acupuncture and
Oriental Medicine Alliance (hereafter referred as
the "Alliance") is a professional membership
organization that shall encourage and honor the
diversity of practitioners and traditions that
exist in the field of acupuncture and Oriental
medicine. The Alliance shall encourage the
integration of acupuncture and Oriental medicine in
American health care, expand the public
understanding of and promote access acupuncture and
Oriental medicine for all people. The
Alliance shall foster high quality health care,
education and research, shall promote and cultivate
discussion, broad representation and the
empowerment of individual and organizational
members at state, regional and National levels.
National Acupuncture Detoxification Association
(NADA)
National Certification Commission for Acupuncture
and Oriental Medicine
NCCAOM is
committed to a tripartite mission of establishing
entry-level standards for the safe and competent
practice of acupuncture, Chinese herbology, and
Asian bodywork therapy; evaluating applicant
qualifications through national board examinations
in these areas; and certifying practitioners who
meet NCCAOM standards of competency.

American Herbal Products Association exists to

American Herbalist Guild (AHG)
The American Herbalists Guild is a
non-profit, educational organization that
represents the goals and voices of herbalists. It
is the only peer-review organization for
professional herbalists who specialize in the
medicinal use of plants.
American Botanical Council (ABC)
For over a decade, The American
Botanical Council has educated the public,
governmental agencies, research institutions and
industries on solid scientific research on the safe
and effective use of medicinal plants. ABC
publishes the well-respected peer reviewed journal,
Herbalgram.
Herb Research Foundation (HRF)
As an education organization,
the Herb Research Foundation has been educating the
public, health practitioners, legislators, and the
media about the health benefits and safety of
herbs. HRF has built a specialty botanical library
containing more than 250,000 scientific papers on
thousands of herbs.
International Herb Association
IHA is a vibrant international
organization representing herbal business
professionals worldwide. These businesses are
involved in the retail/wholesale of herbs and herb
products, growing herbs, manufacturing products
made from herbs, processing herbs and using herbs
in crafts, culinary uses and landscaping.
Northeast Herbal Association
Our roots were planted in December
1991 when a small group of herbalists gathered to
share their ideas and experiences. They discovered
a common need for a regional voice, and so created
a means for networking and for showcasing
professional educational opportunities; a vehicle
for the exchange of ideas and for the discussion of
topics such as herbal remedies, growing and
wildcrafting, retailing, supply resources, and
herbal crafts; and a trusted source for answers to
legal and political issues. From this gathering the
Northeast Herbal Association was formed.
United Plant Savers (UpS)
United Plant Savers (UpS) is a
non-profit grassroots membership organization
devoted to protecting and replanting at risk native
medicinal plant species. UpS raises public
awareness of the endangerment of native medicinal
plants.
Veterinary Botanical Medicine Association
The Veterinary Botanical Medicine
Association is a group of veterinarians and
herbalists dedicated to developing responsible
herbal practice by encouraging research and
education, strengthening industry relations,
keeping herbal tradition alive as a valid
